Disability Start Guide — Plain-Language Guides to Disability and Carer Benefits

Independent guides to claiming disability and carer benefits and challenging decisions: PIP, Adult Disability Payment, Attendance Allowance, DLA, Carer's Allowance and more, in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

The forms arrive with dozens of pages of questions, and none of them ask what you actually want to say. A claim for PIP, Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance or Carer's Allowance turns on how a condition affects ordinary things: getting washed and dressed, cooking a meal, getting to an appointment, getting through the night. Many people write too little, leave out their worst days or never claim at all, and a refusal letter often sits unanswered until the deadline has passed.

Each of our guides takes one benefit, one condition or one decision and walks through it in the order you will meet it: who qualifies, what the form and any assessment ask, how to describe typical and worst days accurately and completely, which evidence helps, what an award can unlock, and the deadlines for asking for a decision to be looked at again or appealing to a tribunal. They are written for the person claiming and for the family member or carer helping them, with every rate and rule dated.

Every guide is independent and is not connected with DWP, Social Security Scotland, the Department for Communities, Services Australia, MSD, the Department of Social Protection, Service Canada or any charity. We explain the process; we do not give medical or legal advice, and we never suggest overstating anything. Each guide points to the free help that exists, from Citizens Advice and local welfare rights services to the condition charities and the tribunals' own guidance.
