About Disability Start Guide
Disability Start Guide is an independent publisher of plain-language guides to claiming disability and carer benefits and challenging decisions, written for disabled people, their families and unpaid carers in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
Disability Start Guide is preparing its first 120 guides; each guide's page opens for purchase when the guide is published.
What Disability Start Guide does
Claim guides (in preparation)
Each claim guide walks through one benefit in one country, such as PIP, Adult Disability Payment, Attendance Allowance, child DLA, Carer's Allowance or the Disability Support Pension: who qualifies, the form, any assessment, evidence and the decision.
Condition guides (in preparation)
Each condition guide explains how PIP, Attendance Allowance or child DLA looks at one condition, how to describe its effects on typical and worst days accurately, and which evidence helps.
Reconsideration and appeal guides (in preparation)
Each challenge guide covers one route for a decision that looks wrong: mandatory reconsideration, redetermination, award reviews, overpayments and tribunal appeals, with the deadlines.
Blue Badge, adaptations and work support guides (in preparation)
Each practical-help guide covers one scheme, such as the Blue Badge, a Disabled Facilities Grant, Access to Work or the Motability Scheme: who qualifies, the evidence and the steps.
What Disability Start Guide is not
- Disability Start Guide is not a law firm or a welfare rights service, and does not give legal advice or represent anyone.
- Disability Start Guide is not a medical service, and does not give medical advice.
- Disability Start Guide is not a government department, benefits agency or charity, and does not speak for any of them.
- Disability Start Guide is never a guide to overstating or inventing symptoms, and never a promise of an award or amount.
Disability Start Guide guides explain published rules and processes in plain language. They are general information, not medical or legal advice. Disability Start Guide has no affiliation with DWP, Social Security Scotland, the Department for Communities, Services Australia, MSD, the Department of Social Protection, Service Canada or any charity.
What makes Disability Start Guide different
One benefit, one condition or one decision per guide
Official pages explain each rule separately. Each guide puts one claim or one challenge in order, from the first form to the decision and the deadlines after it.
Accurate evidence, not exaggeration
The guides show how to describe typical and worst days, fluctuating symptoms and the help needed completely and honestly, and which evidence supports it.
Written for the person and their carer
Plain language, practical steps and every rate and rule dated, for the person claiming and the family member or carer helping with the forms.
Other places people look for this help include GOV.UK, mygov.scot, nidirect and other official benefit pages, Citizens Advice, Advicenow, Disability Rights UK and local welfare rights services, condition charities such as the MS Society, Contact, Mind and Age UK, Benefits and Work and other paid benefit-guide sites and Citizens Information (Ireland) and Economic Justice Australia.
Who uses Disability Start Guide
- Disabled people and people with long-term health conditions claiming a disability benefit.
- Adult children and partners filling in Attendance Allowance or PIP forms for someone else.
- Parents claiming DLA, Child Disability Payment or Domiciliary Care Allowance for a child.
- Unpaid carers claiming Carer's Allowance, Carer Support Payment or Carer Payment.
- Anyone with a refusal, a low award or a review letter and a deadline.

- Medical questions about a diagnosis or treatment: a GP or specialist is.
- The NDIS in Australia, SSDI in the United States, or paid Disability Tax Credit services in Canada.

How guides are researched and checked
- Each guide starts from research reports compiled from published sources, including the relevant laws, government and agency pages, and the forms and handbooks those bodies publish.
- The guide is drafted from those reports.
- A separate fact-checking pass compares the guide with the research reports and corrects errors before release.
- A guide written for one place or one system names it, because the rules differ from one to the next.
